In the post-synodal apostolic exhortation addressing the pastoral care of families titled Amoris Laetitia, the Holy Father, Pope Francis, remarks, “The joy of love experienced by families is also the joy of the Church… For all the many signs of crisis in the institution of marriage, the desire to marry and form a family remains vibrant, especially among young people, and this is an inspiration to the Church. As a response to that desire, the Christian proclamation on the family is good news indeed.” After all, it is through families that the Church exists and furthers God’s gospel and mission in the world. However, are the families of contemporary times capable of carrying out these great responsibilities? Are families faltering, facing the challenges posed by the modern world? How are our families prepared to withstand the modern challenges that threaten to cause the role and purpose of this primary social institution to crumble?
This book, entitled “The Contemporary Family: What Parents and Children Need to Know” will be a guidebook for families as it authoritatively teaches about the value and sanctity of human life across all its stages: infancy, childhood, adolescence, youth and adulthood, and the challenges we must overcome at different ages through our human life cycle. The book is unique and profound in that its analysis of the foundation of the family looks at the family unit from different perspectives. It is an effort to confront the challenges and pressing issues that families face today by firmly adhering to the teachings of the Church. – Cardinal Oswald Gracias
